We usually think of our ecosystem as being made up of living things outside of us, but in fact, our ecosystem is inside us as well! Our bodies are home to hundreds of different bacterial species, so actually, only about 10% of what we call “me” is actually human. The state of our internal ecosystems is affected by how we interact with our external ecosystems and the resulting shifts in our microbial communities can determine aspects of our mental and physical health. “Some of My Best Friends Are Germs” by Michael Pollan is one of the first articles I read on this topic of the so-called “microbiome” and it BLEW MY MIND. Enjoy!
